So has anyone seen Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I think it is Tim Burton's best film. I love how it completely diverges from the first film adaptation and likens itself to the book. See the first film was good, but if anyone thinks about it, they kind of made it a bit too biblical. For example Charlie is Jesus, Willie Wonka is God, Slugworth is the devil and the Oompa Loompas are angels. The children represent makind and each of them commits a sin, and in doing so break the contract they have signed with god. The factory essentially represents eden in a sense, however only the first scene is a true representation. They enter a marvelous garden, and like Adam, Augustus(both names start with A and this is of course the first letter of the alphabet if you want to read into it too much) breaks god/Wonka's warning and is taken away from eden, with the very christian ascending. Wonka also states that the river should not be touched by human hands, another link to god. Next after the sin of greed the followers get on a boat and enter a mysterious dark tunnel. There is no earthly way of knowing where this ship is going, indicates that like noah on his ark there is no way of man knowing when the great flood would end. Also there are evil images of death and animals on the wall whilst god seems to disturb the passengers. They proceed to the inventing room. The concept of wonka inventing is simlar to that of god. The next victim violet is collected by the Oompa Loompas and rolled away for her sin of vanity. They then go to the fizzy soft drink roon, the best evidence i have. Charlie drinks the drink and ascends and comes back down again, very much like Jesus. Veruca is then sent down the shoot for wanting what she can't have and the Oompa Loompa's dance has several references to crosses and crucifiction. Mike TV shrunk on Charlie is left. His goodwill and difiance over temptation makes him the winner. Wonka's room is white, a christian colour (shade for those of you who are annoying) that represents divinity. Notice how eveything in his room is half. this shows that he is god, the good half, his antithesis the devil. Wonka giving charlie the factory shows jesus accepting gods world and gods children as his own and the final flight in the eleavtor is jesus final ascension forming unity with god. His grampa might be many things, especially the holy spirit, but i don't have any evidence. there are more things but i can't remember them now.
With the new film i like that instead of the bible, Tim Burton uses Diosney's interpretation of Alice in Wonderland as their inspiration. Don't say that i am wrong too hastily, i have only seen the film twice, but i have picked up a fair bit. The most easy way to get you all on my side is by the nut room scene. Clearly Veruca Salt is wearing a practically identical style of lothes to Alice. She is draged in to the hole like Aliced is dragged and falls down the whole mucht he same way as alice in the movie. Wonka takes on meany rolls, he is like the chesire cat in the way he mimicks Veruca's dad and also does alices laugh A LOT (especially when he looks over at her dad and stops, much like in alice when she does the smae to the queen). The squirell knocks on veruca's head like the lizard when she grows in the white rabbits house. When they all enter the factory and they interupt wonkas walking it is identical to tweedle dee and tweedle dum popping up in front of alice who tries to chace the rabbit. The shrinking and growing of Mike Tv is like alice with the mushroom. wonka also acts like the mad hatter and even has a much simlar hat, though not as sim ilar as that in the first movie, perhaps an inspiration. Violet turning violet is also like the red quuen turning red, notice the irony in their names and the colours they turn. Veruca is much like the queen, however Augustus mother has the same hairstyle as the queen and wonka ironically says watch your heads. Wonka repeating himself in the garden is also seen in Alice. Wonka's hairstyle resembles that of the king. Well that's all i can think of now, there is more i shll remeber it later.

Ummmm
Oh god. Where to begin. Totally agree on liking the second rendition better, although I've never read the book. Must say, I did VERY much enjoy this Wonka better. No, not because I'm a Johnny Depp squealer, because I thought the character was so much more believable. Something about Willy and his dad just struck a chord with me. I'm not sure why, but I felt that the original Wonka just didn't have enough visible layers. Layers yes, but we really saw no indication as to why he behaved the way he did. There's only 2 problems or difficulties I see with anything you said up there. The first was about Charlie being Jesus. I don't think Charlie was arrogant enough to be Jesus. In all seriousness. That's really as far as I can elaborate on that point.
The second was about the original, and Slugworth being the devil. I don't think that's entirely accurate. Yes, God was a bitch; I mean, he practically destroyed everything he'd come to create. But being hypocritical? Doesn't really seem a "God" thing to me. Why would he use deceit to bring out innocence and purity in a child? That, I don't understand.
But that's about all I got...

Re: Ummmm
Its not hypocritical, he created slugworth like god created lucifer and they both tempt each child, charlie being good willed and goodhearted sees past this and shows his integrity. He wanted a legitimate person to take over his kingdom like god.September 29 2005, 03:18:20 UTC 6 years ago
yep.
God didn't create Lucifer? Lucifer was a fallen angel... or did God create the angels too? I'm not really with it. I tried to read the bible but only got past genesis.September 29 2005, 03:20:06 UTC 6 years ago
Re: yep.
God created all the angels, Lucifer was one of the first, an Archangel who betrayed godSeptember 29 2005, 03:26:06 UTC 6 years ago
Ahhh...
I see. Well then yeah, essentially, Wonka did create the competition. Good point. Top work.September 29 2005, 05:04:32 UTC 6 years ago
